Lookdowns are extremely laterally compressed fish with long snouts and small mouths. The fish are shiny and silver in color. The second ray on both its anal and dorsal fins is many times longer than the surrounding rays. The combination of these elements gives the Lookdown a distinct and unique appearance. For this reason, Lookdowns (especially small sized lookdowns) are often sought after for large premium aquariums.

• • • Spacious Tank Requirement: Lookdown fish require a very large tank, ideally 200 gallons or more, to accommodate their size and active swimming behavior. They need plenty of open space to swim horizontally, as they can grow up to 12-15 inches in length.

    • Sensitive to Water Quality: Lookdowns are sensitive to water quality and require pristine, stable conditions. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to maintaining their health and preventing stress-related diseases.

    • Diet and Feeding: In captivity, lookdowns should be fed a varied diet of high-quality marine foods, including small fish, shrimp, and other meaty items. They prefer live or freshly thawed frozen food and may require some time to adapt to prepared diets. Frequent feeding is necessary to support their fast metabolism.
